Things to Know About RT-PCR Test

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2, a novel coronavirus. Various tests can detect the virus and help people get the treatment at the right time. RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) is one of the tests used to detect the presence of the COVID-19 virus within a sample. It is a fast and sensitive test, also called a molecular test. RT-PCR tests work by detecting the RNA or DNA of a pathogen (infection-causing organism) or irregular cells in a sample. Here’s everything to know about the RT-PCR test.

Reasons Why This Test is Done?

One has to get the test done under the following conditions:

  • The person has COVID-19 symptoms, including cough, fever, loss of taste and smell, body ache, shortness of breath, and fatigue.

  • If recently exposed to someone with confirmed COVID-19. It is imperative to get tested at least 5 days after the person has had contact with a COVID patient.

  • One may require getting the test done for screening purposes, including at their workplace, college, or school.

  • If someone plans a trip to another state or country, they need to get tested 3 days before their flight.

Procedure

The real-time RT–PCR is quick and has fewer chances for errors or contamination since the whole procedure can be performed within a closed tube. It is considered the most effective and accurate testing method to detect the virus of COVID-19. In this test, a health care provider collects a fluid sample by inserting a long swab into the nostril and taking fluid from the back of the nose. In many cases, a sample can be collected from a person’s throat, or s/he may be asked to spit into a tube to make a saliva sample for testing.

Results

Positive Result

A positive result means the person has an active infection with the COVID-19 virus. S/He remains isolated and should follow the doctor’s guidelines and the treatment plan to cure the condition.

Negative Result

A negative test result indicates a person is not infected with the Coronavirus. However, sometimes a false result could happen due to the timing and poor quality of the test sample. So, if anyone has COVID-19 symptoms and the report is negative, s/he should repeat the test after few days and stay away from others.

As RT-PCR tests are the most effective method in detecting infection even before symptoms occur, these tests play a critical role in preventing the spread of COVID-19. RT-PCR tests can be booked online at the best price in Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Gurgaon, and other cities in India.
